Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the regular inspection and testing of electrical equipment and associated leads/plugs to ensure the safety of those who utilise the equipment.

All electrical appliances classed as portable or transportable, i.e. any equipment that has a flexible cable and/or plug fitted for mains operation, requires a periodic safety check.

Electrical safety and testing are an essential part of Business oweners responsibility to themselves and others , with over 20,000 injury’s (many fatal) each year.

The Landlords and Tenants Act 1985, requires landlords  to “ensure the electrical installation is safe when the tenancy begins, and that it is maintained in a safe condition throughout that tenancy”

The Institute of Electrical Engineers state that: “Periodic inspection and testing is necessary because all electrical installations deteriorate due to a number of factors, such as : Damage, wear and tear, corrosion, excessive electrical loading, ageing and environmental influences, therefore installations must be periodically tested and inspected”
